Maria Munir

Human Rights Activist

Maria Munir is an LLM student at the University of York, and prominent human rights activist. Most famously known for their “Obama moment”, they challenged the President of the United States on discriminatory laws in North Carolina to international media acclaim, and raised awareness of non-binary as a gender identity. Obama later wrote to Maria to reaffirm his commitment.

Maria has secured commitment from the Civil Service Fast Stream to overhaul their application process and introduced gender neutral toilets. This work resulted in Maria being shortlisted for Liberty’s 2016 Christine Jackson award for young people. They are a regular public speaker on diversity issues. For instance, Maria represents BME and LGBTQ voices on Mind’s Equality and Diversity Steering group, and has previously spoken as a Stonewall Role Model.

Maria also campaigns against human rights violations, an example being they presented a petition to 10 Downing Street on the Kashmir situation.
